March 2011 Illnesses

March was a crazy month. Wednesday that spring break started, Anna ended up in Children's Mercy. She had RSV symptoms, but she did not have RSV. She couldn't breathe very well, and was taking 63 breaths a minute and in distress. She ended up on an IV and oxygen for 4 days. They were deep suctioning her (meaning they stick a tube down her nose and into her chest to get all of the gunk out). She finally got better and got to go home Saturday, March 12.

I had a cyst in my neck that I've had forever. I had made an appointment for March 24 to have it looked at and probably removed. It had never given me any trouble, but I had been advised by an ENT to just have it removed. Sunday morning, March 13, I woke Jason up telling him that I needed to go to the ER because my cyst hurt so much I couldn't move my head. It was bright read, hot, and infected. I went to the ER where I received antibiotics, pain medicine, and she called and got me into an ENT the next day. Monday I went to him, and he cut open, cleaned it all out, and left it open so it could settle down a bit. A week or so later we scheduled surgery for April 21. It is kind of hard to tell, but here is a picture before the surgery:

And here is one afterwards:

Sarah had been running a fever on and off for almost a month and just not feeling well. Wednesday morning, March 16, she woke up complaining about her legs hurting. I figured she had a charlie horse and would be fine. She went roller skating and still continued to complain about them all day. That night, we went to church and she didn't want to do anything. Finally she started crying and wanted me. She wouldn't walk and her fever was back. It was freaking me out a bit, so I brought the boys and Anna home, and I took her to urgent care at Children's Mercy South. She would scream if you even touched her legs. They xrayed her whole leg and drew bloodwork to see what was going on with her.

The doctor came in and said that they saw something on the xray on one of her legs, but they couldn't really tell what it was. So they decided to send her to Children's Mercy Downtown for more testing. We came home and Jason took her down there since Anna was still at home. When they got there, they found out her creatine kinase was extremely elevated. A normal level for her would be less than 200, and hers was 2580. It is an indicator of muscle degeneration or injury. They also had to watch her kidneys to make sure they were functioning properly. They did a big viral panel to try and figure out what was causing this. Eventually, it came back that she was positive for influenza B, and as the virus was breaking down, it cause muscular poly-myositis. They kept running her iv fluids to try and flush everything out.

Saturday morning, they came in to tell us her blood culture was positive, and we had to wait and see what the bacteria was that grew from it to make sure it was a contaminant and not something that we need to treat. (Back in 2007, she did get septic.) When it great back, it was a common bacteria found on the skin. So finally, Sunday afternoon, she got to come home.
