Lazy Saturday

Well, at least for the kids it is. I have already washed, dried, folded, and put away 4 loads of laundry, vacuumed the downstairs (again), unloaded and loaded the dishwasher, and now need to dust and pick up some.

Joshua is being a geek and getting ready to go to a birthday party :)

Zachary is playing his DS

Sarah is watching a movie, holding her baby doll, sitting by a dump truck, and playing with a toy (multi-tasking).

Another busy week

It has been fun, but exhausting again! I need a break, so we are canceling our plans for tomorrow for some much needed laziness and R&R (aka: laundry, dusting, picking up toys, running a couple of errands, etc).

It was the boys last week of swimming for this session. They start again July 7. They both have made big strides. Joshua is at least picking his feet up off the ground of the pool, and he seems much more comfortable in the water. Zachary is swimming really well, and yesterday even jumped in deep water, recovered himself, and made it back to the wall. I am very pleased with these lessons.

Today we went to Deanna Rose (a local petting zoo) with some friends for a couple of hours. It's a great place to take the kids. They have animals, playgrounds, pony rides, goat feeding, and it was just a nice day. We go there about once a month.

Lots of updates on this week (including Sarah's doctor's appointments)

TUESDAY:
The boys had day 2 of swimming. In the afternoon, Sarah had her appointment with the ENT. He said that she looks great right now, but if she gets another sinus infection in the next 3 months, we are looking at removing her adenoids and flushing her sinuses. That works about 50% of the time. The other 50% of the time, they do sinus surgery. But, before I'd let him touch her, I would definitely have a 2nd opinion. Then we went and met some friends at the park for a couple of hours. It was great ~ the kids had a ball and got out some pent up energy.

WEDNESDAY:
Swimming lessons #3, and they are improving every day. Wednesday afternoon, we met some friends at the pool. Sarah had a ball at the pool. She would wade out into chin deep water, then dive under and swim under water. I'd pick her up after a few seconds and she said "yay! I did it!" I think she might be swimming by the end of the summer.

THURSDAY:
Swimming lesson #4. I felt like it was huge strides for Joshua because he actually did some floating on his own, and kicking with a kick board. Up until this point, he has never picked his feet up off the ground on his own while in the pool. He isn't afraid of water, he will put his head under water without a problem, jump in where he can touch the bottom, etc. But he had some fear of actually picking his feet up to actually kick or float. I am optimistic that something will click for him and he will swim this summer. They have lessons next week as well.

Then Sarah had an appointment with the allergy and asthma doctor. She felt that Sarah is doing extremely well. We also re-tested her for a cat and dog allergy, but she tested negative to both of those, which is a good thing. Hopefully things will stay status quo (as they are now), and she will remain healthy.

After that, a good friend of ours came up from Pittsburg. We spent the afternoon with Cheryl, getting Sarah's flower girl dress for her wedding, and doing some other shopping. We had a nice dinner and enjoyed spending the day with her. It has been a while since we have gotten to spend so much time with her. We have known Cheryl about 12 years, and she has been such an important part of our lives.

FRIDAY:
After lessons, we went to have Sarah's repeat CT Scan done of her sinuses to make sure she is completely clear (even though her symptoms would indicate she is). Then we had to take the scan over to the allergist so she could look at them. She was very pleased as all of her sinuses are now clear. We finally got home around noon. We had a nice evening visiting with some friends.

Happy Anniversary!

Yesterday was Jason and I's 9th anniversary. It is hard to believe that it's been 9 years, and it's been a full 9 years! Graduating from college, having 3 kids, buying a house...

It has been an amazing journey. In September, we will have known each other for 15 years. That's half our lives! Here are a couple of pics. The first one is from Sweetheart Dance in Feb 1996, and the 2nd in spring break in Colorado in March 1997.

It is hard to believe that 9 years ago yesterday we were standing in the Bed and Breakfast saying our vows and marrying my best friend. We were going to have it in the garden at the B&B, and we decided to move it inside. It was a good thing because it poured all day long! There were some funny things...I forgot my shoes and had to wear shoes that were too small and a high heel. As soon as we were done with the wedding, the shoes were off for the rest of the night! Our "wedding singer" couldn't sing at all, and in the video, we were cracking up as he was singing. It was so special to have a good friend of mine perform the ceremony that I have known since I was 12! I can't wait to see what the future holds in store. Here are some pictures from the wedding.

Father's Day Ramblings

So I was thinking this evening...

Growing up, Father's Day was always a really tough day for me. It was a reminder of my Father's decision to leave his family for someone else and start a new family with her, and the fact that he was hardly involved in our lives at all. From the age of 12, I never received a birthday card from my father, and very few acknowledgments of any events in my life from the time he moved out when I was 6. I can remember very specifically being in Paris on Father's Day of 1995. I was sitting in the Louvre, bawling my eyes out with a friend over my absent father and did a lot of writing in my journal about him. I decided that day that he would not have that power over any day of my life ever again. I was 16.

After that, Father's Day had no meaning for me. I had given up trying to find cards that were generic and didn't express how my "father" had always been there for me, taught me so much, etc. It was nearly impossible to find anyway, and just created a lot of stress for me as silly as that might sound.

Father's Day of 2000, I was 21 and 3 months pregnant with our first child. Father's Day started to turn then, as the focus of the day shifted to my husband, the father of my baby. And the following year, when Joshua was 6 months old, it completely changed. The day is about the father that my husband is to our children. Unless I hear from my Dad for some reason, I don't generally think of him. Last year, I happened to find a generic card that said something like "Happy Father's Day, I hope you are blessed with all that is important to you." I bought 3 and sent him the same card this year, giving it very little thought.

My theory is, everything that happens to be, good or bad, makes me who I am. I like who I am, so I have to be grateful for all circumstances.

OK, I'm done rambling.

Our trip

We spent a couple of days this week in Des Moines. It was nice! We got to visit with Grandmother and Grandfather for a few hours, and Wednesday we got to go with Jason's cousin and her kids to the zoo. They have an amazing elephant show there! I haven't seen anything like it before. Sarah was terrified of the elephants though, so she spent most of the time screaming.

Here are a few pics of the kids at the zoo

And a few of the elephant show (which I missed a lot of because of Sarah)

On our way home, we dropped Joshua off at Church camp. It's 2 nights and 3 days. I am sure he is having a ball and I can't wait to hear about it when he gets home tomorrow!

Busy Week

Now that summer is here, it is busy! There are so many activities to do, playdates, going to the pool, summer reading program at the library, going to the zoo...and this week was no different. But it was a lot of fun!

This upcoming week, Joshua goes to Church camp. It's 2 nights and 3 days, about 100 miles from here. He is very excited. I am a bit nervous given his dietary restrictions due to celiac disease and the fact that he can't swim, but I know he'll have a great time. I signed all of the kids up for the summer reading program at the library, and the first set of books he picked out mostly have to do with different states and countries. Maybe he will have his Uncle Nate's love of history and geography.

Zachary is looking forward to spending more time at the pool. Both boys start swimming lessons on June 16. He is really doing well with learning to read, and I am still hopeful he'll be a pro by the time kindergarden starts in the fall. He's mad that he doesn't get to go to camp too this year. He just had his first visit with the chiropractor due to some severe knee pain over the past year that we haven't been able to figure out. He feels so much better now (knee and back) and told me last night "Mom, I didn't even know my back hurt!"

Sarah's allergist called last week and even though she is still on her 60 day course of antibiotics (for a chronic sinus infection that keeps re-infecting her lungs), wants her to go ahead and see an ENT. She has an appointment on June 17 for that. In the mean time, she also had her first chiropractor appointment this week. He adjusted her neck to try and get her sinuses to drain. It helped her feel better, though at her 2nd adjustment, she was off again. She will go one more time again before we see the ENT. We have tried all of this medical stuff, and she has been sick for 10 months, so we are trying some different techniques!

We are all going to Des Moines next week for a few days. Jason leaves tomorrow because he has to work up there next week, and the kids and I are also going up. We will drop Joshua at camp on Thursday (it's halfway between here and Des Moines) on our way back. We are looking forward to seeing Jason's family as we haven't been up there since January.
